Anya Kaufman and Nick Ognibene
Originally from Carlisle, Anya is currently completing her PhD at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow Scotland focusing on social sustainability. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of St Andrews, in Sustainable Development. Nick Ognibene, who is on the Conservation Commission also studied Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews, graduating a few years before Anya.
Both of them were interviewed in the Mosquito early in 2023.

The development of Solar Houses include Carlisle : illustration from the Department of Energy
MIT have been researching into solar house design since 1938, when the first solar house was constructed, called Solar One. Solar Seven was built in 2007. However between Solar Six and Seven, MIT also constructed a Solar house in Carlisle, on Munroe Hill and this time it was all electric!.
From the Department of Energy paper
"Energy conservation features, passive solar heating, solar domestic hot water collectors, and heat-pump space heat- ing, combined with the photovoltaic power system that is coupled to the electric utility, give a balanced design for a successful energy self-sufficient residence. A joint effort by architect, builder, financier, and PV system engineer, the house was designed by Solar Design Associates, built by Builders Collaborative, financed by the Co-operative Bank of Concord and the photovoltaic power system was designed and furnished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory with DOE funding. Occupants of the house will be a typical family. Electric and thermal performance of the house will be measured and power flow and energy use will be tabulated. This project is part of the national pro- gram to develop renewable energy sources for widespread use in houses during the late 1980s when residential solar PV costs are expected to be economical. "
The house is also mentioned in the introduction to the PBS Documentary " The Sun Queen"
In 1980 President Regan slashed the funding for renewable energy. Imagine how different the world would be if that program had continues.
The house has been altered since it was first built.
